Brain Aneurysm Treatment in Hyderabad

Assessment, monitoring and endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms. Treatment choice is individual: not every aneurysm needs treatment.

What is an aneurysm?

A brain aneurysm is a weak spot in the wall of an artery in the brain that bulges outward, like a small balloon. Most form where arteries branch at the base of the brain.

Unruptured aneurysms

Many aneurysms cause no symptoms and are found by chance on a scan done for another reason. Occasionally a larger aneurysm presses on nearby nerves, causing symptoms such as double vision or a drooping eyelid.

Many unruptured aneurysms are monitored with periodic imaging rather than treated straight away.

Ruptured aneurysms

When an aneurysm bursts, it bleeds into the space around the brain (subarachnoid haemorrhage). This is a medical emergency.

Symptoms include a sudden, severe headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness. Immediate emergency care is needed, followed by treatment to secure the aneurysm and prevent re-bleeding.

Investigations

  • CT angiography (CTA): a CT scan with contrast to show the brain’s arteries
  • MR angiography (MRA): MRI imaging of the arteries, often used for follow-up
  • Digital subtraction angiography (DSA): detailed catheter-based imaging, used when precise information is needed for treatment planning

When is treatment considered?

The decision weighs the risk of rupture against the risk of treatment. Factors include:

  • Size and location of the aneurysm
  • Shape (morphology), such as an irregular outline
  • Growth on follow-up imaging
  • Clinical history, including a previous bleed and family history
  • Individual risk, including age, blood pressure and smoking

Treatment approaches

Where treatment is advised, options include:

  • Endovascular coiling

Soft platinum coils placed inside the aneurysm through a microcatheter.

  • Flow diversion

A fine mesh stent across the aneurysm neck that redirects blood flow.

  • Other suitable approaches

Such as stent- or balloon-assisted coiling, or surgical clipping by a neurosurgeon, depending on the aneurysm.

Treatment choice is individualised and discussed with each patient.

Follow-up

Both monitored and treated aneurysms need follow-up: imaging surveillance (MRA, CTA or DSA) at intervals, and clinical review including blood pressure control and stopping smoking.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Does every brain aneurysm need treatment?
No. Many small unruptured aneurysms are monitored with imaging. Treatment is considered based on size, location, shape, growth and individual risk.
How often will I need scans?
It depends on the aneurysm and any treatment. Your doctor will advise a follow-up schedule, which may change over time.
What can I do to lower the risk?
Keep blood pressure well controlled, stop smoking and follow your monitoring plan. Report any sudden severe headache immediately.
