Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders

Diagnosis and long-term care for Parkinson’s disease, tremor and other movement disorders, with treatment adjusted over time.

What is it?

Parkinson’s disease is a gradually progressive condition in which brain cells that produce dopamine are lost, affecting movement. Other movement disorders include essential tremor and dystonia.

What symptoms can occur?

  • Tremor, often at rest and starting on one side
  • Slowness of movement and smaller handwriting
  • Stiffness of the arms, legs or neck
  • Shuffling walk, reduced arm swing and balance problems
  • Non-movement symptoms such as low mood, sleep problems, constipation and loss of smell

What are common causes?

The cause of Parkinson’s disease is usually unknown; age is the main risk factor, and genetics plays a role in some people. Similar symptoms can be caused by some medicines, small-vessel strokes and other neurological conditions, which is why careful diagnosis matters.

When should someone seek urgent care?

  • Sudden worsening of movement, confusion or hallucinations
  • Falls with injury
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • High fever with severe stiffness, especially after stopping medicines suddenly

Call 108 or go to the nearest emergency department for these symptoms. Do not stop Parkinson’s medicines suddenly without medical advice.

How is it evaluated?

Diagnosis is mainly clinical, based on the history and a detailed neurological examination. Brain imaging and other tests may be advised to look for other causes.

Medication management and movement difficulties

  • Medicines such as levodopa and others that replace or mimic dopamine
  • Adjusting doses and timing as symptoms change
  • Managing wearing-off, dyskinesias, freezing and falls
  • Physiotherapy, exercise and speech therapy

Follow-up

Parkinson’s disease changes over time, so regular follow-up is important to review symptoms, side effects and daily function. Do not stop Parkinson’s medicines suddenly.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is every tremor Parkinson’s disease?
No. Essential tremor, anxiety, thyroid problems and some medicines can also cause tremor. A neurological assessment helps tell them apart.
Can Parkinson’s disease be cured?
There is currently no cure, but treatment can improve symptoms and quality of life, and is adjusted over the years.
