Dr. Manoj Vasireddy is a Consultant Interventional Neurologist at KIMS Hospitals, Kondapur, Hyderabad. After his DM in neurology he completed a post-doctoral fellowship in stroke and neurointervention. Much of his work is with people who have had a stroke or have been found to have a brain aneurysm, and he also sees patients for everyday neurological problems such as headaches, dizziness, seizures and numbness.
What an interventional neurologist does
A neurologist diagnoses and treats conditions of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. An interventional neurologist has further training in treating problems of the brain’s blood vessels from the inside. Instead of opening the skull, a thin tube (catheter) is passed from an artery in the wrist or groin up to the brain under X-ray guidance. Through it a clot can be removed, an aneurysm can be filled with coils, or a narrowed artery can be stented.
Not everyone needs a procedure. Many conditions are best managed with medicines, follow-up scans and control of risk factors such as blood pressure and diabetes. That decision is made after looking at the scans and at the patient as a whole.
Conditions he sees
- Acute ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA, or “mini-stroke”)
- Brain aneurysms, both unruptured and ruptured
- Narrowing of the carotid arteries in the neck
- Cerebral venous thrombosis (a clot in the brain’s veins)
- Headache and migraine
- Vertigo and dizziness
- Epilepsy and seizures
- Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders
- Neuropathy: numbness, tingling or burning in the hands and feet
- Memory and thinking problems
Procedures
- Cerebral angiography (DSA), a detailed X-ray picture of the brain’s blood vessels
- Mechanical thrombectomy, to remove a clot in selected stroke patients
- Aneurysm coiling
- Flow-diverter treatment for selected aneurysms
- Carotid artery stenting, when it is the right option for the patient
If you think someone is having a stroke
Do not wait for an appointment. Call 108 or go straight to the nearest hospital emergency department. Sudden weakness of the face, arm or leg, slurred or confused speech, or sudden loss of vision are reasons to go at once, even if the symptoms seem to settle.
Booking a consultation
Outpatient consultations are at KIMS Hospitals, Kondapur, Monday to Saturday, 9AM to 5PM. Please bring previous scans (the CD as well as the report), discharge summaries and a list of the medicines you take. You can call +91 93816 26283 to book, or send reports on WhatsApp before the visit.
